Description English 9 is a traditional survey class which includes the foundation of high school English studies: reading, writing, literature, grammar and mechanics, listening, speaking and thinking skills. The primary goal is to establish a foundation on which to build your knowledge and understanding of the English language and literature.
Unit One: Personal Narrative Students will write a personal narrative after they investigate the way other writers work through their own writing decisions, then will practice generating ideas and revise writing, including inserting cutting, or reducing words.
Unit Three: Argumentative Essay Students will read, respond to, research and identify claims in published texts before writing their own argumentative essay in which they develop a claim in response to a prompt, support the claim with evidence, and establish a line of reasoning.
Unit Four: Reading Fiction (Novel) Students will read and analyze the classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.
Unit Five: Literary Essay Students will analyze character development, the author’s purpose, craft, and thematic development. Unit Six: Drama Students will read “Romeo and Juliet” for understanding, as well as examine the elements and structure of Shakespearean drama, exploring how Shakespeare uses figurative language to enhance meaning.
